Sewing 101 with Hand-Wovens

Do you have hand-woven fabrics but are not confident in sewing them? Learn the basics of sewing with hand-woven fabrics in this 2 1/2 hour workshop. You'll learn the essentials of washing and ironing. You'll sew simple hems on some of your own fabrics. 

 

Skill Level: Just beginning or a beginner level sewist

Supplies to Bring: Please bring your own hand-woven fabrics (any size, any fiber), even your sampler. FABRIC scissors, snips scissors, and pins. You will use the Weaving Center sewing machines for this workshop. NOTE: thicker fabrics are not as easy to work with for beginners and are not recommended.

Lois Matson and Marsha Lodge are weavers and experienced sewists who volunteer their sewing skills at the Hartford Artisans Weaving Center.

Sewing a Hand-Woven Zippered Clutch Bag

Expand your sewing skills with hand-wovens by creating a lined, zippered clutch bag (approximately 8x10"). In this 3 hour workshop, you'll learn the basics of interfacing, lining, setting a zipper and sewing a bag!

 

Skill Level: Completion of Sewing 101 or at least advanced beginner with your own functional sewing machine. You should have experience sewing straight seams, threading a sewing machine, ironing and using a rotary cutter.

Supplies to Bring: Please bring 2 pieces of hand-woven cotton fabric precut to 8x10", 2 pieces of commercial fabric for liner precut to 8x10" (medium weight silk, linen or waterproof fabric), thread to match your fabric, FABRIC scissors, and pins. Please bring your own sewing machine. A neutral zipper and interfacing will be provided. Optional supplies: zipper, pull, leather cord or charm.

  • Check payment is due within 2 weeks of your registration to secure your spot.

  • Students should be aware: Good manual dexterity is a necessity. Shoulder, elbow, and wrist movement are needed to wind a warp and dress a loom; floor loom weaving requires hip, knee, and foot movement. Weaving does involve repetitive motion; students may take breaks as needed. 

  • Our classrooms and studios are currently only accessible by a flight of stairs.

  • Refund Policy and Class Cancellations: 

    • The Weaving Center reserves the right to cancel a class due to low enrollment. Should we do so, registered students will receive a full refund. 

    • For active classes cancelled due to weather or instructor illness, a make-up time will be scheduled. 

    • Registered Students: Please notify the Weaving Center as soon as possible if there is a need to cancel your registration.
      - If there is a waiting list and the spot can be filled, a 3% processing fee will be deducted from the total refund if you have paid by credit. If you have paid by check and the spot can be filled, you will receive a full refund.
      - If a spot cannot be filled, no refund will be offered. This includes absences due to unexpected events or personal circumstances such as illness. Please contact us if supplies are included as part of the registration fee.
      - We do not offer credit towards another class.

  • No-shows forfeit any refund and make-up classes (for instances other than weather related cancellations or instructor illness) are not offered.
